# European address data — attribution and scope

This directory contains a derived subset of the **Countries States Cities Database**, maintained by dr5hn and contributors:

https://github.com/dr5hn/countries-states-cities-database

The database and this derived geographic subset are licensed under the **Open Database License 1.0 (ODbL-1.0)**. The complete license is supplied as `SOURCE-LICENSE`. Attribution is also visible in the store-address form.

- Retrieval date used for this product review: 8 October 2026.
- City release: `v3.2-export.28`, `json-cities.json.gz`.
- Country and state records: repository JSON exports on the retrieval date.
- Source URL manifest: `release.json`; content hashes: `source-hashes.json`.
- Selected scope: records whose country region is Europe, plus CY, TR, GE, AM, AZ and KZ. Includes territories and transcontinental countries; not a political-status assertion.
- Output: 58 countries/territories, 2,182 administrative areas, 77,618 cities/localities.
- Transformation: retain country ID/code/name; area ID/code/name/type; city ID/name; group cities under their source state ID; sort names. All matching source city records are retained. No sampled demo-city whitelist is used.
- `europe.json` is the reusable machine-readable derived database. `europe.js` wraps the same records for offline browser use. This geographic subset remains available under ODbL 1.0 separately from the prototype application code.

The source is community-maintained and does not guarantee all localities, recent boundaries or administrative-level consistency. The application offers explicit unlisted-locality entry. This is not an official NUTS/LAU code mapping, nor a geocoder or postal-address verification service.
